What causes moles?

Moles develop when the cells that give your skin pigment (melanocytes) are clustered close together. They are various shades of brown and can be flat or slightly raised. They can be as tiny as a pinpoint or several millimeters in diameter.

Moles are almost always harmless. However, if you have a mole that changes shape or size, has a mottled appearance, or has an irregular border, have your dermatologist at Anchorage Dermatology & Cosmetics perform a skin check.

Why should I have moles removed?

There are several reasons to see a dermatologist to have moles evaluated or removed, including:

  • Your mole is cancerous or could potentially be cancerous
  • You have multiple moles
  • Your mole has changed in color, shape, or size

You may also want to consider removing moles if you find them aesthetically displeasing.

Are there different types of mole removal?

Mole removals are standard procedures and can be done to remove unwanted moles for cosmetic reasons or to prevent a mole from developing into a more severe skin disease such as skin cancer or another type of cancer.

There are several ways to remove a mole, including:

Scalpel removal

We will use a scalpel to cut away the mole and surrounding tissue and stitch you up, but you may be left with a small scar depending on the mole's size.

Punch biopsy

This procedure uses a specialized punch tool placed over the mole and essentially ‘punches’ out the mole and surrounding area, removing it completely.

Shave biopsy

This procedure uses a razor blade to shave the mole from the skin and surrounding area.

Biopsies are performed in the office and then sent to a specialist or lab for testing. Sometimes, biopsies can result in the entire mole being removed. Each mole removal method is quick, and the team uses local anesthesia to dull any pain. Some patients may experience slight scarring after the site has healed.

Whether your reason for coming to Anchorage Dermatology & Cosmetics is for a consultation for cosmetic or preventative purposes, the team recommends first biopsying moles to ensure the moles have not developed into melanoma.
